For a lot of people, the stock text messaging apps that come with their phone might be all they need to get by and communicate with the lot in their address book via text and pictures. The standard call feature might be all they need for talking, and Skype or FaceTime may satisfy their video-call needs. But for millions, and perhaps billions, these applications are not enough, either because of lack of features, weak integration, disagreeable style, or anything else a user can find unsatisfactory.

There are plenty of options out there for people who want to get past the limitations or shortcomings of the stock communication apps. Some simply replicate the features but with a slightly different style or better function. Here, we’ll take a look at the world’s most popular over-the-top communication apps meant to cover for dull stock apps

How to Use WhatsApp

WhatsApp, a play on the casual greeting "what's up?", is an ad-free mobile messaging app that allows users to exchange text and media messages through their Internet data plan or through Wi-Fi. Users do not have to pay for SMS. Once you start using WhatsApp to connect with your friends, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it!

Steps

  1. Use WhatsApp Step 1.jpg
    1
Download WhatsApp for your phone. The app is available on its website and in the iTunes App Store and Android Marketplace.
    • WhatsApp does not sell advertising so users have a clean messaging experience, but that means that they charge a small fee for using the app. iPhone users pay $1.99 to download the app, while other phones can download the app and enjoy a one-year trial for free. After that, there is a $0.99 subscription fee for using WhatsApp.

Manage your Favorites. Once in your account, you will see all of your contacts who already have a WhatsApp account on the "Favorites" tab. Keeping this list will allow you to know who has WhatsApp, but it may be too cluttered if you want to access a few frequent contacts with ease.
    • You can tap "Edit" in the top left corner and then "Delete All" to clear the list and start from scratch, or toggle the red delete switch next to each name to delete people individually

viber

Free phone calls for real! Enter the Viber app.

What really is Viber?
In a nutshell, it is to voice calls what WhatsApp is for text messaging. This means, 2 persons with Viber installed can exchange phone calls for free (merely using a 3G data plan or WiFi). For now, there are no ads at all, and no fees. Very honestly, I wouldn’t mind paying WhatsApp prices for an app like this.

Viber is a VOIP app, much like Skype. Benefits of Viber over Skype are, you do not need the app to be open to receive calls. It scans through your contacts and picks out friends who have installed Viber. It’s currently only for the iPhone, but Android and BlackBerry versions are promised soon.
Application Screenshots
The interface has been made extremely similar to the native iPhone phone application, and it’s rather surprising Apple didn’t kick up a fuss about it – or the many telcos they partner with. Here’s the Favorites and Recent screens – showing you can make calls via normal mobile (defaults to the native iPhone app) or Viber.
The only gripe I have with making normal mobile calls is that it does not return you to Viber upon call completion.
Then we have the Contacts and Contact Details screens, which look identical to the iPhone’s. I like the way Viber is boldly demarcated.
And finally, the actual process of making calls… If you choose a Viber number, you will get a regular call screen, except for the icon that allows you to switch to the regular GSM network – possibly in the event of poor data reception.
Making calls to regular numbers (righthand side screen) will fire up the regular iPhone app again.

kakao Talk

An app called, KakaoTalk, and that is a cross platform instant messaging system and voice calling system. Kakao allows its users to send and receive messages including photos, videos, voice messages. Much the same as WhatsApp but KakaoTalk has gone a little further. You can also send URL links, and contact information, both on a one-to-one basis and in groups, all for free.

If you decide you have a cell phone you almost certainly have sent and received a text content before and also probably have a text content program. A bill every month for each text message may happen, but, that you have choices to send messages that is free. Or Even Better voice chat to people for free anywhere is the world. If you have a Blackberry you almost certainly know that already you can use Blackberry, iPhone or Android Smart phone can now send messages without spending a dime, KakaoTalk is a down loadable smart phone app for mobile devices that does that.

Register KakaoTalk

Register KakaoTalk

You only need to enter your phone number without registering or logging-in. KakaoTalk you are eligible to send messages and carry messaging conversations through your phone with other users whom have the KakaoTalk application mounted on their phone. KakaoTalk’s ffree call feature is a mVoIP feature that enables users to call each other once the connection has been established in the chat room. It is recommended that you are on a strong WiFi connection. KakaoTalk calling feature lets users to talk in chat rooms, so all requests come as push alerts. Before calling, try sending a message to the person you wish to call. KakaoTalk is most like BBM but provides you the capability to instant content along with other phones.

Phone calls are not free. Only calls made via the Kakao chat rooms are free. Normal calls and will be charged according to your service provider.  KakaoTalk merely enables you to call without having to dial your friend’s number.

The cool thing about KakaoTalk, also is true about BBM, may just be the function to gain any time a message is received just in case seriously is read. You are able to see just what his phone receives and see when he or she reads you message. A  easy confirmation when the message was sent successfully.
Instant  messaging is straightforward and cost less than text messaging with this app. I can easily see over time many people will switch from normal text messaging to app based free messaging. And a rise of popularity in instant messaging programs which include KakaoTalk.

                                                 Kik (Free)

Best Messaging Apps for Android: Kik
With over 80 million users, Kik is another app that can't be ignored. Like WhatsApp, it is cross OS and features many nifty features.
There are many similarities to WhatsApp, such as the ability to send photos, have group chats, as well as being able to search for YouTube links, images and self drawn sketches. More interesting features include downloadable emoticons, our favourites being Rage Memes and South Park characters.
You can also create and send different memes from within Kik, or "Photobomb" your friends. The latter is Kik's answer to SnapChat, which we will cover later.
Kik also prides itself on being personal and private, not having to share your mobile number or email address, rather a username that you can create.
If Kik doesn't take your fancy, why not try BBM? BBM uses another private way of connecting, the same way it always has, taking a pin rather than username. It too supports both group and image messaging.

                                              Skype (Free)

First gaining prominence on the desktop, and gaining a lot of publicity following its sale to Microsoft, Skype is possibly the best known and overall best video calling app out there.
It is also more than just a video and voice calling service, however. IM is fully supported, with Skype's custom array of smileys making their way over, albeit without the 'cute' little animations that we are so fond of.
Again, group messaging is supported, as is the sending of media files and video messages.
Connection to Skype can be done through a dedicated username and password or through an existing Microsoft account, something you might have created to use Windows Live or Windows 8. Since the merge with Microsoft, the Redmond based firm is pushing to connect any existing Skype accounts to your Windows account.

SnapChat (Free)

Chances are that you have heard of SnapChat, not least because of what you can use it for. It is becoming ever popular as a way to share images quickly and privately, with the added bonus that they don't hang around.
SnapChat gained popularity because of the temporary nature of the images sent. Images are captured and then sent immediately, to select SnapChat compatriots, with a self destruct timer built in.
Images, or videos, can be sent for anything up to ten seconds, and then wipe themselves off the receivers phone. Whilst there is nothing to stop a screenshot, senders are notified if this occurs. Image editing is also possible, but only to a narrow degree.
A small level of text can be added, and images can be sketched over, so you can show your friends what you look like with a bright red cartoon afro. You can also save your own images.
